The cycling metaphor

Is cycling a means to an end or a goal itself?

I see my daughter starting to cycle and she does very well. The bicycle and she are inseparable. She simply loves the practice. Observing this made me realize that for me cycling became a means to an end, over the years.

This reminded me that for skills, the goal seems to change when we have acquired a certain level of the skill. We stop studying and start practicing thoughtlessly. We start seeing the skill as a means to an end. Most of the time.

When we keep studying the skill, we’ll probably discover new things. And discovering new things is a great way to find joy. We just need to be a little bit more aware.

We might just want to try to practice with a little more effort to discover new things in the stuff we do so regularly. It could make any skill you practice more joyful.
