The dead link

Imagine you want to go to a specific store in your city. You step into your car and drive.

At a certain moment road signs point you into an allee, and you follow them. The allee turns out to be a dead end.

What do you do? Do you return home? Do you turn the car and try a different route?

In the internet world, this happens all the time.

We are searching for a specific thing, and we get routed across the internet.

When we encounter a dead link (404), we perceive this website as a worthless source. But is it?

I know this analogy doesn’t hold up in the end, although I spot the similarities between our behavior in physical life and digital life.

We managed to become an adaptable species, but sometimes our digital behavior doesn’t seem that way. We seem lost in the weeds, instead of acting purposeful.

It’s time we take charge.

Use 1 browser tab at the time. Multitasking is a lie.

If you encounter a dead link, don’t stop to travel towards that goal, just figure out another route that leads to the same goal.
