Collection of Catastrophes

November 23th 2019 I’ve published my book Collectie van Rampen (Collection of Catastrophes).

It is a book that you will write. I’ll give you the handles. This book is needed if you have a catastrophe, to unwind. You write it. It is the first step to a routine and more peace in your crisis situations.

Do you want more emotional resilience because sometimes you just don’t know where to even begin? Or are you a perfectionist, but your life sometimes is not so perfect? Then this book is for you.

You probably recognize it. A meltdown. Such a moment that your head is just too small for all thoughts, emotions and responsibilities that rest on your shoulders. A disaster. Disasters of this kind are human. And everyone has problems with it. One person is more sensitive to it than the other and so one person has it more often than another.

I can still remember my first real disaster. I was in high school, the work for all my subjects and projects became too much. I saw deadlines coming and I felt the responsibilities that I had weighed heavily on my shoulders. Too many possibilities to fail. Or actually no way to do it all right at all. The mountain was not a mountain but a wall. And from the moment I realized that I was a chunk of emotion and inconsolable. The next day I came to my senses again.

Content and process

We are now a few years later and I have learned where I get my emotional resilience from. Sleep. Sport. Mindfulness (Headspace). No coffee. Fresh air. No drinks. No screens. Read. Write. Listen. To talk. Everyone has their methods. I call those methods the “content.” I know that when I make concessions to the content, I slowly cut my own legs. That is possible from time to time, because I don’t want to live like a monk. And that works great for me. But that is why piece two of the puzzel; “process” is so important.

When I feel that I am building up more cortisol (stress hormone), I notice that in various things. I often become curt. I start sweating earlier, during exciting conversations. I wake up in the morning with nerves with fight / flight thoughts for conversations that day that I normally whistled. I do not fall asleep and are sucked into my phone for hours in the evening, before going to sleep. Then it’s time to pay more attention to my process: signaling, acting. If I notice that I am getting stressed, I switch to “strict” routines: Sleep at 10 p.m. Max 2 coffee in one day. Meditate every day. Exercise at least 2x p / w. It is the norms that I attach to my values: Do. They have become habits with me, so that I can fall back on them and regain control of my stress level.
