Unexpected questions

In my job interviews with candidates this week, I managed to ask unexpected questions again. (yes, indeed, you sense a little pride)

Symptoms are

  • People don’t have an instant answer
  • When people answer, the answer is authentic and never rehearsed
  • Nearly always, people start ‘shining’ when they answer

“Tell me about your dreams”

“Who are your heroes?”

“What’s the last thing you’ve learned?” and “why?”

“You seem a reader, which book would you recommend?”

When we ask unexpected questions – not only in job interviews – we dip our toes in the water of people’s motivation and inspiration.

Talking about people’s core beliefs often teaches about what people are going to do for/with you. More, than what they have done in the past. Actions may vary, but beliefs are hard to change.
