Nervous vs. excited

Simon Sinek opened my eyes on nerves with his riff on interview questions at the 2012 London Olympics “Were you nervous?“.

The definition of nervous is…

Your heart races, you visualize the future, your hands get clammy.

The definition of excited is…

Your heart races, you visualize the future, your hands get clammy.

It’s the same.

It’s the story we tell ourselves.

Not only is how good or bad we feel a matter of perspective about how we benchmark our current ‘sufferings’. It’s also (even more so) how we teach our brains to interpret the signals the body sends.
