The Corona virus outbreak in China scares me.
In 1918-1920 the Spanish Flu killed 100.000.000 people.
A hundred million. Let that sink in.
HIV and AIDS killed over 30.000.000 people from the 1960’s now.
The SARS and MERS coronaviruses were amongst the most dangerous in the 21st century and both infected thousands and only killed hundreds.
The new virus, for now called “Coronavirus” masters the news and trending searches for days already.
I can’t remember the 2009 flu, that was the most lethal in the 21st century, although it was lethal for 203.000 people.
More than 200 times as lethal as SARS and MERS combined.
A Pan Demos – Greek for all people and the origin of the naming of pandemic – virus isn’t of this time anymore.
However.
Heart disease kills 17.000.000 people every year.
Cancer kills 9.600.000 people every year.
Traffic kills 1.250.000 people every year, with another 20-50 Mio injured or disabled.
The real pandemics are not a virus.
Pan Demos have a more than significant risk to suffer from Heart disease, cancer and traffic, and die.
So we can say now that there’s no rational need to be afraid of the Coronavirus.
It’s the news that drives us crazy.
A simple calculation. Let’s say this potential ‘pandemic’ of the Coronavirus will cause 1.000 deaths (more than its brothers SARS and MERS coronaviruses combined).
In that case, the chance you will die from the Coronavirus is 0,000059 times the chance you die from Heart disease.
Are you afraid of Heart disease?
