Backbone system

Everyone has a backbone system.

It’s the behavior you display when stuff occurs ‘out of the ordinary’.

I’ve noticed that when I come across a set-back in my life, I’m going to allow myself more ‘bad’ behavior like bad eating, less sleep, more coffee, more digital numbing (YouTube, social media) do more ‘nice instead of necessary’-stuff at work. That’s my behavior pattern. My backbone system.

And that behavior triggers more behavior: makes my conversations and work worse, makes my decision making worse, creates more tension in my body so I sleep worse, have less energy to go for exercise and eat worse etc… Until I break out (holidays or a reset day or something, good conversation, etc) and find the way back up.

This ‘bad’ behavior consumes days to weeks and sometimes even months, after days-weeks or months of ‘good’ behavior.

I call the system that you fall back on when your plan/commitment/accountability fails (because of a minor or major set-back) the backbone system.

This year I want a new backbone system. Because I have noticed the current system takes me to long and drags me too far off.

I noticed the behavior all along, but now I’ve become aware that it’s a system I can change.

Keep you posted.
